Casa Marina: A Minimalist Haven in Tai Po

Creating Simplicity and Harmony

Designed by Matthew Li, Casa Marina stands out with its unique approach to interior design. Unlike traditional luxurious and extravagant designs, this house embraces simplicity and minimalism. The use of less than five colors throughout the entire house creates a harmonious and consistent experience that matches both the owner's personality and the structure of the house.

One of the standout features of Casa Marina is the installation of stylized chandeliers and wall lamps. These not only serve as decorative elements but also help to lower the focal point in the high-ceiling environment, adding a touch of elegance to the space.

To enhance the idea of simplicity and consistency, wooden elements have been incorporated into the design. The wooden flooring not only connects the various areas of the house but also bridges the gap between the interior and the private garden, creating a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces.

With a total area of 2,006 square feet, Casa Marina offers a spacious and comfortable living environment. To maximize the use of space, some of the bedrooms have been transformed into functional rooms, such as an extra-large bathroom with a lily-white bathtub at the center and a dressing room-like cloakroom. Additionally, each room is equipped with a bathroom, closet, and television, ensuring convenience and comfort for the owner and guests.

The design of Casa Marina took into consideration the distribution of natural light. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room and kitchen allow ample sunlight to enter, while darker colors are applied to balance the lighting contrast and create a cozy atmosphere. In the upper levels, lighter colors are used to reduce the sense of oppression and promote relaxation.

Despite its unique design, Casa Marina presented some challenges for the designer. The half-layered structure of the house, with one room on each level and stairs in between, required careful planning to meet the owner's requirements and needs. Additionally, the disproportionately high ceilings created an initial sense of insecurity, which was overcome through thoughtful design choices.

The Casa Marina project began in March 2019 and was completed in September 2019. It has garnered recognition in the design community, winning the Iron A' Design Award in 2020 for its well-designed, practical, and innovative approach. This award acknowledges Casa Marina's integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its contribution to a better world.

With its minimalist aesthetic, harmonious color palette, and attention to detail, Casa Marina stands as a testament to the power of simplicity in creating a comfortable and serene living space.
